FIRST EDITION. Engraved frontis. 8 pages of publishers adverts at rear.
A very good copy in the rare Carter binding variant 'B' (John Carter. More Binding Variants in English publishing 1820-1900).
Original publishers burgundy coloured cloth with front board showing the horses head facing right, stamped in black and with gilt reins, within a gilt and black floral and rustic design and the title stamped in black letters, the lettering expanding from the middle of each word. This copy has been professionally re-backed with the original spine laid down. New dark brown coated endpapers. The spine and edges are a little rubbed and the top of the original spine has a small area of loss but overall an acceptable copy in a rare binding variant.
