A dramatic sketch of a bearded man crawling among desert rocks, with a snake emerging from behind him. Initialled F C C ’16 in bottom right hand corner, this sketch was most likely to illustrate one of his short stories. Cornell was quite a good watercolourist, and there are a large number of his works in the family’s possession – most of them not signed, so this one is uncommon. There is some fishmoth damage to the surface of the painting, and typically, some pencilled sums and aide memoires on the back – as Cornell was known to be an inveterate scribbler.
