The book is invaluable on many counts. These include its meticulous and exhaustive research and its clear illustrations. Very interesting, too (especially in the light of the Boers' marksmanship, which was widely acknowledged as the best in all the world's armies at the time), is the coverage the author gives to the thoroughness and effectiveness of the musketry training of the two Republics' more than forty commandos (divided into 125 districts, or "wyke", each under a field-cornet, equivalent to a captain).
The full-colour varnished dustjacket is lightly chipped at the extremities and rubbed at the back. The brown paper-board covers, black lettered to the upper panel and spine, are lightly shelf-worn. The binding remains very good but the back cover is slightly sprung. The endpapers - different sepia photographs back and front - are unmarked, as are the 215 pp of text, illustrated with photographs and diagrams, and index.
