Proclamation. … It is, therefore, hereby proclaimed that the Hon’ble John Romer, Esquire, has this day taken charge of the … Office of Governor of the Presidency of Bombay and its dependencies. By Order of the Hon’ble the Governor in Council. T. Williamson, Sec. to Govt. Bombay Castle, 17th January, 1831.

Provenance: later ink note at head ‘Appointment of my Grandfather as Governor of Bombay’

An original, apparently unrecorded, broadside proclamation, announcing the appointment of John Romer, following the death of Sir Thomas Sidney Beckwith on the 15th January, 1831.

John Romer’s appointment was as acting governor and was short-lived. He took office on 17th January and stepped down on 21st March 1831 when the Earl of Clare took over (John Fitzgibbon, 2nd Earl of Clare, 1792-1851
