Cape Town. The Receding Years

The photographs and other reproductions illustrate Cape Town's history from the time of Drake's voyage ("the Fairest Cape") to 1917 (a Claremont Cinema). Most are from the Cape Archives, with archive references on the contents page. All have their own particular interest so it is perhaps invidious to single out the early cable way, some of the street scenes, bringing in the catch at Roggebaai and the 1836 treaty between the Governor of the Cape and Chief Umsiligas (Moselikaze). 

The book is full-bound in ivory synthetic leather boards, with the upper board padded, and hinged at the top. A sepia illustration and lettering are on the upper panel. The images and type inside the book are also in sepia. The title page is on the front free endpaper; [ii] pp of acknowledgments and contents; 51 pp of introduction and captioned illustrations, with the last page printed on the back free endpaper. The contents are printed on patterned heavy ivory matt paper.

CONDITION. The (horizontal) spine ends are lightly bumped. The binding remains tight. The upper board is clean and fine, but the lower board has some light blue, red and green stains towards the centre. There is a heavy ink birthday dedication on the front paste-down but the contents are otherwise unmarked.
