London & New York: Cassell, Petter & Galpin, [undated, but c.1866-1878]. 1 volume in 18 original parts, large quarto (12 3/4 x 9 3/4 inches; 324 x 247 mm). Engraved additional title, 24 plates printed in colors, numerous wood-engraved illustrations (some full-page), the family record printed in gold on one side only of the final four leaves (only the 'Births' section has been used). original decorated wrappers (light damage to the backstrips). Provenance: William Henry & Elizabeth Chesson (b. 1854 and 1848 respectively, see 'births' section).
Cassell's Illustrated Family Bible, the 'coloured plates edition' in the 18 original parts: rare thus. The work can be dated, as the Gustave Dore Paradise Lost is advertised which was published in 1866, and the imprint was only used in the form transcribed up until 1878.
