xix + 294 pages, original green cloth gilt – top and bottom of the spine and corners a little worn, a label appears to have been removed from the front cover leaving a slight residue, bookplate  -Walter E. Gurney – on the front paste-down endpaper, binding a little loose, light foxing throughout and on the uncut page edges.

Scott 1. After writing to several publishers in vain with a view to getting this first book published, Messrs. Trübner & Co. agreed to print 750 copies of this work in return for Haggard’s cheque for £50. Only 154 copies were sold in two years and the publisher found this 'most unsatisfactory.'
