First edition (pp. xix, 294). Tall octavo (22 cm) in original green publisher’s cloth, gilt title and decorations.
The first appearance of Haggard’s first book, published at his own expense - or perhaps his father’s, was critical equally of Imperial policy and its local application. This copy one of about 150 sold of 750; once Haggard had achieved literary recognition, many more copies were sold in a later edition. Top and bottom edges of spine abraded, a few specks on back cover; otherwise clean, bright, and sound.
