Although this set, No 207 of 950 standard copies, was previously in the Welkom public library, ite remains in very good condition. The three volumes bring together 66 of the author's shorter contributions to journals and the like, grouped under (Vol 1) General History and Social Life of the Cape of Good Hope, (Vol 2) History of Law, Medicine and Place Names in the Cape of Good Hope and (Vol 3) Cape Archives and Records
The volumes, with are edited by the Struik himself, are enhanced by frontispieces to all three volumes and an 11 pp biographical introduction in Vol 1 by R F M Immelman, which is essential reading for those interested in the life of Graham Botha, South Africa's premier archivist, who was in his 80th year when these volumes were published.
Maroon leathercloth-boards, gilt and blue lettered to the spine, plain endpapers, xvi + 320, vii + 324 and vii + 331 pp of text and indexes. Some cover corners are lightly rubbed, there are library labels to the foot of the spines and stamps on the first and last pages of each volume, and there are minor binding cracks at the front and back of Vol 1. The volumes are otherwise undamaged, unmarked and undiscoloured, as are the frontispieces, which are all present.
This is an attractive and collectable set.
