How it works

Register

General Smuts, who contributed the preface, befriended Reitz at his Doornkloof home after Reitz, the son of the last surviving president of the South African Republic (the Transvaal), returned from exile in Madagascar after refusing to take the oath of allegiance; later, and well before the publication of this book, Reitz founded one of South Africa's largest law firms, was a member of the government and saw further service with Smuts in East Africa and then as Colonel of the Scots Guards in the First World War; later, he was appointed South Africa's High Commissioner in London, where he died; Commando was the first of a trilogy of this author's books on the Anglo-Boer War; three of the images reproduce Smuts's preface, which is as moving in its way as the book itself

Red cloth-boards, a map on both endpapers, 331 pp of prelims, unillustrated text and index
