While its author was not a Nobel literature laureate, some critics believe that Paton's Cry, the Beloved Country was South Africa's greatest novel in English, and certainly in the same league as Schreiner's Story of an African Farm.
It's unusual to find a good first edition with dustjacket, and very unusual indeed to find a cancelled block of 4 mauve one-penny ox-wagon stamps postmarked "Ixopo" cut from an envelope and mounted on the front paste-down. There is a 7/10/48 owner signature on the front free endpaper, but no other markings. The 3-colour dustjacket has been well repaired and is not price-clipped (9s 6d). The beige cloth-boards, crimson to the upper boards and the spine, are lightly rubbed at the spine-ends and upper corners. The binding is slightly out of square. The endpapers and 269 pp of text and glossary are otherwise unmarked and undiscoloured.
