How it works

Register

The first volume was published in 1952 as part of the commemoration of the tercentenary of Van Riebeeck's landing at the Cape and the other volumes followed soon afterwards.

The original diary is in Nederlands, while the introduction, notes and other material are in Afrikaans.

This 3-vol set is from the Nederlandse Boekerij ANV, Cape Town, but (see below) show few signs of being ex-library.

Full-bound in light-tan cloth-boards with gilt-and-red design and lettering to the upper boards and spines, plain eggshell endpapers, top page-edges tinted green, text on medium-weight wove paper and inserted illustrations on gloss art paper.

  • Vol I (1952). 1651-1655. Frontispiece portrait + xlvi + 473 pp of text and notes + 8 inserted b/w plates plus 2 maps at the back.
  • Vol II (1954). 1656-1658. Frontispiece portrait + xii + 491 pp of text and notes + 5 inserted b/w plates.
  • Vol III (1957). 1659-1662. Frontispiece portrait + xvi + 579 pp of text, notes and indexes + 6 inserted b/w plates.
CONDITION. Library marks and stamps are few - modest inked volume numbers at the foot of the spines, small stamps on the title-pages and acquisition numbers in ink on the versos of the title-pages. Some of the boards are very lightly rubbed, and there is slight wear at the extremities of Vol I. The set is complete, otherwise unmarked and undiscoloured. It has been lightly and carefully read.

Especially considering its age - 61-65 years old - the 3-vol set remains in near-fine condition.
