Though not undamaged, this is a better than good copy overall of the first edition of 1882.

In Dutch, Lion Cachet's history of the South African [Transvaal] Republic, which begins with the main strands of the story since Van Riebeeck arrival at the Cape in 1652, is both detailed and authoritative.

As in the case of the second edition copy, the map of South Africa stated in the notes to the binder to be bound at the back is appears not to have been inserted. However, the Transvaal map present in this edition was excluded from the subsequent edition.

Maroon cloth-boards with black embossed design and gilt coat of arms to the upper board and blind embossed design to the lower board. A new matching Skivertex spine and endpapers have been added with a new gilt title on the spine. viii + 580 pp of text, bibliography and errata, but no index + sepia frontispiece portrait (of a youthful Paul Kruger) and 6 other inserted sepia plates + the Transvaal map.

The original boards are bumped at the corners, lightly rubbed front and back and rubbed along the front edge of the upper board. The flyleaf is sunned and torn, the half-title has a library stamp and the title-page shows set-off from the frontispiece. The map is complete but some of the folds are torn. More seriously, four leaves, 335/6, 535/6 and 557/60 have small internal tears which need attention. A dozen leaves at the back are creased.

Writing in 1882, with the Anglo-Boer War still far in the future, Lion Cachet's theme might be summarised as "triumph through adversity".
