C B Brink's preface includes the passage (translated): "The product of [Scholtz's] labour is not just a version of what was already known about the growth and blossoming of the Transvaal Church. [The author] checked and tested all his facts against sources which until now were very seldom, and sometimes never, consulted, so that his original study has thrown light on many of the contested issues in the history of our Church."

In his own foreword the author writes that he was reluctant to tackle this project because his planned writing programme extended for some years into the future. However, he had yielded to pressure and undertaken the research and writing as a "moral duty" - but with such little regret that he looked forward to the possibility of beginning a second volume that would complete the Church history.

The orange dustjacket is essentially complete and un-priceclipped (19s 6d), but rubbed and chipped and with a small tear at the foot (see image); the jacket is stuck at the head on to the green cloth-boards, which are fine, with the binding remaining tight. A previous owner's name and other details are in ink on the front free endpaper. The contents - ix + 304 pp of text, bibliography and index + 7 inserted plates - are all on art paper and are unmarked and undiscoloured, making this a near-fine copy overall of a 58-year-old book.
