The author, originally from Holland, was involved in publishing and book selling before his arrival in South Africa in 1955. With his specialist knowledge of Dutch Heraldry , the author not only established a heraldic terminology in Afrikaans, he launched an inquiry into the origins of old Dutch coats-of-arms of South African families which became , 'Die Wapens van die ou Afrikaanse Families'. Not only Chair of the Heraldry Society of Southern Africa, a member of the Heraldry Council, editor of the Journal of the Genealogical Society, he was also commissioned to design the state symbols of the Republic of South Africa.

For Afrikaans families, this book is the first publication that gave the meaning of surnames, who the descendants were and from where they came . Also detail of trades, marriages and arrivals in South Africa. About three thousand Afrikaans families are presented in an easily understandable format with no complicated family trees or obtuse genealogical tables.
