When the author's original [English] edition appeared in 1902, it was hailed almost in wonderment by critics in Britain and readers in South Africa (notably by Olive Schreiner). Schreiner almost demanded an Afrikaans translation, and when this finally appeared in 1922 Hobhouse was still alive to welcome it and to write the introduction.
Matt oatmeal dustjacket with red lettering to the upper face and spine, protected in an archival plastic cover, green cloth-boards, with the same lettering in black, plain cream endpapers, inserted frontispiece on art-paper with her facsimile signature and the year 1922, other inserted plates, xxvii + 436 pp of text in three parts and 6 appendixes with tables (no index).
CONDITION. The protected dustjacket is fine, the copy remains tightly bound and the boards are lightly shelf-rubbed. The endpapers and contents are complete and there is no foxing. No ownership signature or other markings, except for 4 lines on p xiv (the opening of the author's introduction to the Afrikaans translation) in soft pencil.
