Benjamin Moodie was obliged to liquidate his estate Melsetter, Orkney, in 1816, prior to his emigration to the Cape Colony.
There are two documents relating to this.
1. ALS letter to him from Cranston & Veitch, attorneys?, on a copy of the printed notice advising creditors of his executing a Trust Deed authorising an immediate and unqualified sale of his Orkney estate.
Two sides written, one printed, folded to 190mm high x 115mm wide. complete with no major loss, but a significant vertical tear (or cut) to the front which does not impair legibility of the text. thus overall condition less than good.
2. A handwritten Memorandum of his estate in Melsetter, Orkney. This is an extended analysis of the pros and cons and finances of the estate which was to be put under the hammer. Appearing not quite complete & lacking some figures, this interesting document was intended to acquaint prospective purchasers with the opportunities offered by the property.
Eleven sides written on three sheets folded to 320mm high x 200mm wide. Well handled, frayed to edges, folds parting, but no major loss or tears affecting text legibility. Generally in good condition.
