Henry Charles CUTCLIFFE (1833-1873). The Art of Trout Fishing on Rapid Streams: with detailed instructions in the art of fishing with the artificial fly, the natural fly, the fern web, beetle, maggot, worm and minnow, both natural and artificial. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington Limited, [no date but circa 1900?]. Small octavo (7 1/8 x 4 1/2 in; 180 x 115mm). Pp. [i-]xi[-xii; 1-]212.  (Some browning, marginal in the main). Original green cloth, gilt titling and rod and creel on upper cover, brown paper dust-jacket (with author’s initials incorrect on backstrip). (Light approximately vertical crease to lower cover, dust-jacket with damage to backstrip [see images], but otherwise quite good) Provenance: B.H. Bird (signature). A later edition of a popular and quite common book, but here with the very rare dust-jacket. The first edition was published in South Molton in Devon in 1863, and there were at least three later editions/issues before the appearance of the present edition/issue. This was Cutcliffe's only published work on angling. At the time of his early death the author was a Surgeon-Major in the army of Bengal and professor of surgery in Calcutta, but his family’s roots were in North Devon where he perfected the techniques described in this work
