A well illustrated work, this details Ward's travels with Henry Stanley into the Congo. While most of the text concerns travel and exploration, the author experienced attacks by hippos, adventures with cannibal tribes, and bagging a marauding bull elephant, with an excellent, full page illustration highlighting the scene. Original brown cloth with gilt titles and vignette on cover and spine. Original patterned endpapers, both inner hinges starting. Contents clean and tight. Overall, a very good copy.
