Southworth, Secretary of the American Geographical Society, traveled through Egypt and the Sudan with a trip up the Nile. He comments on life and conditions in the region, notes the slave trade, meeting Lady Florence Baker, and observations of the Nile region.
Southworth\'s obituary in The New York Times described him as \"an old-time newspaper man, traveler, and author,\" who was \"a man of brilliant attainments and with acquaintances ranging from Princes to the habitues of lodging houses.\" This work is the result of an expedition that the New York Herald sent him on, from which he turned in the largest expense bill ever submitted to a newspaper, reputedly between forty and fifty thousand dollars. He died penniless.
