Through Rhodesia, Transvaal, Orange River Colony & Cape Colony. Parts I & II.
Photographs mounted in two photograph albums, oblong 4to (210 x 255 mm), in olive green cloth over bevelled boards and titled Photographs on the upper covers with the images presented in window mounts.
Album I contains two unnamed photographs of The Authors each mounted on horseback, followed by 96 images mounted on 24 stiff card leaves, four per page. Album II, contains 48 images mounted on 12 leaves, the remainder of the album is empty. The images are the common 'Kodak' size of 55 x 75 mm. A number of the photographs are faded but most are in good condition – see scans below.
Each photograph is captioned beneath in ink.
The authors are thought to be members of the 71st Co. I.Y. Squadron. The photograph of the first author has the caption beneath 'Killed defending Oudtshoorn Pass 30/1/01'. From Gilbert (S.H.) Rhodesia and After, Being the Story of the 17th and 18th Battalions of Imperial Yeomenry in South Africa, page 312 it is believed the this may be Trooper John Collins who was killed in action at Buffels Klip near Oudtshoorn.
The photographs follow the Squadron through Rhodesia to Mafeking, Kimberley, Boshof and into the Cape Colony to Outdshoorn and Graff Reinet. Finally the departure from Cape Town aboard the SS. "Mongolian".
