A South African Bibliography, volume 1, page 653, 'Name of author does not appear. "Explanatory note" (page iii) is signed G.C. A copy in the Mendelssohn Collection has a presentation inscription on the fly-leaf, "To Allen – from his old schoolfellow, the author, with sincere regards and admiration, George Crowe." In the explanatory note the author explains that this is a portion of a larger work which he intends to produce but which was never published. Pages 1 – 94 contain an account of the part taken by the Naval Brigade in the South African War.' The author includes accounts of the battle of Spion Kop, Vaal Krantz and the final operations leading to the relief of Ladysmith.
