Originally from Holland, the author was involved in publishing and bookselling before his arrival in South Africa in 1955. With his specialist knowledge of Dutch Heraldry , the author not only established a heraldic terminology in Afrikaans, he launched an inquiry into the origins of old Dutch coats-of-arms of South African families which became , 'Die Wapens van die ou Afrikaanse Families'.
Chair of the Heraldry Society of Southern Africa, a member of the Heraldry Council, editor of the Journal of the Genealogical Society, he was also commissioned to design the state symbols of the Republic of South Africa. ( from 'Lions and Virgins')
