The writer sets out to fill the long-felt gap for an authoritative assessment of Botha's role as one of the three leading generals on the Boer side of the Anglo-Boer War. He notes that while the other two, De Wet and De la Rey, have had generous treatment in print, Botha's achievements have been largely ignored from the Boers' own perspective - this despite his promotion to commandant-general at the age of 37 and his victories at Colenso, Tabanyama, Spioenkop and Vaalkrans - more than any other Boer general.
The printed dustjacket has been neatly repaired. The lower corners of the quarter brown leather and rose paper-boards, gilt to the front and gilt and white to the spine, are very lightly bumped but the overall condition is excellent. There is an owner signature on the front free endpaper, but the contents - viii + 223 pp of text, illustrations (including specially drawn double-page campaign maps - see images), bibliography and index + 8 pp of inserted illustrations on art paper - are unmarked and undiscoloured.
