How it works

These beautiful little school books have weathered 140 years remarkably well. Wilmot's Geography of South Africa, second edition, apart from fading of the spine, is in excellent condition. The text looks as good as the day it was printed. 109 Pages. The History, third edition, has seen more of the wars. The upper free endpaper is removed. The text is good until page 42 - 51 were marginal smudging and pencil marking spoil things. The rest of the text is good. 95 Pages.

Alexander Wilmot was educated in Edinburgh and Glasgow Universities. He came to South Africa in 1853. He was postmaster of Port Elizabeth from 1859 until 1886 and was elected to the Legislative Council of the Cape Colony in 1889. He retained his seat until 1910. He was an imperialist and admirer of Rhodes and President of the Temperance Alliance in South Africa. His wrote several books, but was particularly interested in S.A. History and Geography and his books were widely used in schools in their time.
