The story of Graaff-Reinet ,of its founding and growth, is in essence the history of pioneering in South Africa. From this outpost the frontiers of the Cape Colony were secured and the interior explored, civilized and developed.( from the foreword). Appendices include lists of officials (1780-1848), officers of the Graaff-reinet Volunteer Rifle and Cavalry Corps, freemasons, shops (1885), hotels (1850-1886), distillers, families residing (1856) and others.
