First edition, signed in black ink on the title page by Nelson Mandela. The associated letters both confirm that the book was signed by President Mandela, and also explain some of the circumstance which surround its provenance:
1. Achmat DANGOR. One page TLS, on 'Nelson Mandela Children's Fund' headed notepaper, dated 15 April 1999. "It is a pleasure to extend a warm welcome to you and all members of the JVC Group visiting our country ... We also thank you for your interest and participation in the ... (NMCF) through the generous donation that has been made by JVC (UK) Limited. ... We hope too, that you enjoy the Groote Schuur book, signed by our Founder and Chairperson as a memento of your visit." Loosely inserted.
2. Alta KRIEL (curator). One page TLS, on 'Groote Shuur' headed notepaper, dated 23 April 1999. "It is a pleasure to extend a warm welcome to you and all members of the JVC UK visiting the Groote Schuur Residence ... We also thank you for your interest and participation in the preservation of the Groote Schuur Collection through the generous donation made available for conservation and restoration. ... We hope to [sic.] that you enjoy the book Groote Schuur: Great Granary to Stately Home, signed by the President of South Africa, Mr. Nelson Mandela." Tipped onto the front free endpaper.
