Signed by Nelson Mandela on the title page at a charity auction at Groote Schuur on Valentine’s Day, 14th February 1998. The event was the brainchild of the super model Naomi Campell, sometimes described as Mr Mandela’s honorary granddaughter, to raise funds for the Nelson Mandela Childrens’ Fund. Campbell brought couture fashion by Gianni Versace and an entourage of famous friends including Christy Turlington, Yasmin Le Bon, Kate Moss and Alek Wek, who all donated their time. According to a contemporary press report the rich individuals who filled the marquee at Groote Schuur Manor were not prepared to dig deep into their pockets and only R300,000 was raised.
