Although Herschel did not reach the Cape until 1834, the diaries start in 1833, when he was aboard ship on his way to take up his new appointment. Similarly, he writes up about his return voyage in 1838.
Published locally by Balkema, this was the South African edition of the first book in a new series on the history of science of the Humanities Research Center in the University of Texas, which retains the copyright of the present edition.
Unclipped typographical dustjacket printed in brown on tan matt paper on all 5 faces, quarter-bound in brown faux-leather spine, with gilt and white lettering and design, and rose paper-board sides with gilt logo to the upper face, yellow-and-brown head- and tail-bands, plain endpapers, frontispiece, xxxv + 398 pp of text, bibliography and index, with 2 maps and 13 figures in the text, + 12 inserted pp of 20 monochrome plates on gloss art paper.
CONDITION. The dustjacket is lightly edge-chipped, the binding and boards are fine, the endpapers are unmarked but sunned, and the contents are complete, unmarked and undiscoloured, making this a very good copy - near-fine in a lightly damaged jacket.
