Part II describes the history of the indigenous peoples and settlers from Europe. Part III describes a journey through southern Africa, different methods of travelling and detailed descriptions of places visited and peoples observed. 3 colour pull-out maps. Pages [i-vi]vii-xxv[xxvi-xxviii] pp[1]2-604. Includes index at back of book. Red cloth-covered boards, gilt titles on spine. Boards edge-rubbed, pitted, stained in places, some small cracks on spine edges, 1cm tear on back fold at upper spine. Pages edge-spotted and rough cut, but after the prelim pages, no obvious signs of foxing. Map edges worn and discoloured. Page 599/600 facing the maps has been repaired at some stage, and map inner edges have some tears showing usage wear, although the maps themselves are clean and whole. Book is in better shape than it sounds - generally good condition.
