This Afrikaans translation, by the son of the co-author of the English original, Ds [the Rev] R D McDonald, was published 35 years later [see Lot 37] and after the death of General Kritzinger. In his Foreword, R D McDonald notes that in the Anglo-Boer War he had been not only a "veld preacher" but a military secretary, first to General Kritzinger until he was injured, and then to General Louis Botha until the conclusion of the peace.

On the cover and spine, "Ds R D McDonald" is credited with sole authorship, but on the title-page he is joined by "Generaal P H Kritzinger".

Compared with "In the Shadow of Death", there is some additional material, including an extra plate.

The light grey cloth-boards, with green and brown lettering and design to the upper board and green lettering to the spine, are stained (see image) and the head and foot of the spine are soft. The binding is shaken and there is a crack between two sections, but the tapes are secure. There are several names on the front free endpaper, including another member of the McDonald family (from which this copy came). The title-page, the next leaf and the bottom page edge are foxed but the text (vii + 246 pp) and illustrations are unmarked and undiscoloured.

An interesting book, especially in conjunction with the original English title.
