We mourn the passing of Karel Schoeman, Philippolis's near-neighbour in Trompsburg in the Free State. For much of his life he was a loner. But it was his work that counted - a stream of fiction and non-fiction, in English as well as Afrikaans, crowned with Hertzog, Recht Malan and many other prizes and awards.
We have chosen this title in his memory. It epitomises his love for the Free State and for a beautiful Presidential couple - he a literary and well-loved President and she the daughter of Dr Colin Fraser, the Scottish minister colleague of Dr Andrew Murray. Fraser served the Philippolis N G congregation for nearly half a century, before and after the Anglo-Boer War, preaching in English for some ten years until he had mastered Dutch. It was not surprising therefore that Tibbie and Marthinus wrote to each other in English. So, Afrikaans text and English correspondence: another reason for selecting this book.
