It is fifty years since the tragic death of the young Afrikaans writer whom many believed was South Africa's finest poet of her generation.

Published in the year following Jonker's death, this book also announced the Ingrid Jonker Prize. (At the time of publication, the fund for this prize had reached a total of R781.50, from more than sixty donations, mainly in the R2 to R10 range. The fund's patrons were N P van Wyk Louw and Uys Krige, while the seven trustees were representatives of the poet's publishers - Human & Rousseau, John Malherbe and Simondium - and the writers Jack Cope, Adele Naude, Hennie Aucamp and Jan Rabie.)

Running to 12 pp, Jack Cope's tribute, in English, is the longest.

The 2 larger and 4 smaller rubber-stamps in this near very good copy are, with the lamination of the cover boards and the neat tape strengthening of the endpapers, the only indications that it spent time in a public library.

The front free endpaper is torn and partly stuck to the front paste-down. The 91 pp of text are unmarked and undiscoloured. The frontispiece is a portrait of Jonker by the photographer Jansje Wissema and this and the 4 other plates, one with 2 photographs, on art paper are all in fine condition.
