The first South African edition of this major Coetzee title, his second novel, in the original pictorial wrappers (there was no simultaneous hardcover edition). Inscribed on the ffep. "To Sue Robinson, with best wishes, J.M. Coetzee". Although not dated, this is a contemporary and personal inscription and uncommon thus. Of recent years, Coetzee has become much more liberal with his signature and has agreed to sign his earlier novels as well.
Sue Robinson (and her husband Basil) were well known in the Cape Town literary scene, particularly with the Afrikaans writers, and became intimately associated with the group known as the "Sestigers", which included such figures as Jan Rabie, Andre Brink, Breyten Breytenbach, Etienne Leroux and others. Although Coetzee was not a member of this group, he did attend some of their gatherings, making this an interesting association copy.
Slight creasing of the front wrapper (from opening), otherwise a very good plus clean copy, with the ex libris of Basil and Sue Robinson and a small bookseller's label on the inside of the front wrapper.
