Gilt title on green rexine boards, library binding. xv + 343pp illustrated foldout maps, tipped-in sepia photograph of Sir Bartle Frere. 8vo.

Front board embossed "Chelsea Public Libraries". Gilt title & library number on spine. CPL bookplate to front pastedown and another of previous owner to ffep. Front joint has been carefully repaired at some time. The emulsion on the sepia photograph has cracked with some slight loss. All other maps and portraits present. CPL embossed logos here and there. The large canvas-backed military map at the rear is worn at fold crossings but is otherwise sound and complete.

Generally a complete clean sound ex-library copy. Excellent basis for a custom rebind.

Author was special correspondent to the British forces from the entry into Natal at the very start of 1878, through the battles from Isandhlwana to Ulundi in July 1879 and the subsequent winding up of the campaign after that victory. This is a detailed work and is the primary contemporary non-official version of events in the Zulu War. All examinations of the Zulu war must reference this work.
