RESTORED
Edition of 500 copies. Copies now scarce.
The Cyperaceae "play a very important role in the prevention and cure of soil erosion in South Africa", wrote I B Pole Evans, Director of the Botanical Survey, in his preface. Also, he wrote, Professor Schonland's paper [written 97 years ago] makes information generally available that "is essential to the study of the relations of sour veld and sweet veld . . . "
The author was Professor of Botany at Rhodes University College, Keeper of the Herbarium of the Albany Museum and Botanist in Charge of the South-Eastern Area of the Botanical Survey.
70 pp of prelims and text including a table showing the relationship of the 3 South African genera of this family + list of plates + 80 pp of monochrome botanical plates drawn by Stella Gower.
CONDITION. The copy is complete and now rebound in green Skivertex boards with a green marker ribbon. Damp damage to the lower third of front page-edges of the first 7 and last 4 leaves does not extend to the type area except for the last 3 plates (see image), where the damp stain is more obtrusive. "P20" in ink on the title-page is presumably a library reference; there is also a faded and illegible oval violet stamp on the same page.
