J.L. Van Schaik, Pretoria, 1942, prelude, the rhythm of Africa, Modern Art and the Cult of the Primitive, Irma Stern's Wander Years, The Mastery of Form, The Courage of Colour, Black Folk and Brown, In Search of Africa, 63 pages with an additional 11 pages of Plates, yellow boards, 140 x 205mm, condition: very good.

Irma Stern is recognised as a major South African artist, with her paintings reflecting her travels in Pondoland, Swaziland (1926), Madeira and Dakar, Senegal (1931), Namaqualand (1933), the Eastern Cape (1936,1941), Zanzibar (1939 & 1945) , Congo (1942, 1946 & 1955),  Central Africa (1946),  Spain (1960) and France (1963).

Her illustrated journals, Congo (1943) and Zanzibar (1948), display the artistic creativity that resulted from these expeditions.

The art critic, Richard Cutler, told me that when he met Stern at the South African Embassy in Paris in the early 1960's he couldn't beleive that this imposing woman had 'such petit, dainty hands.'

In 2011,  a Stern painting sold for R34 million at Bonham's, London.
