\"I have been unable to decide whether to become a physician or an artist (painter). As a result of this uncertainty, I have pursued both careers...\" Henkel, a German who emigrated to South Africa in 1951, was an orthopedic surgeon and artist, and this biography by his wife Margot spans his early years as part of the fanatical Hitler Youth, to his years in South Africa up to his sudden death in 1977, and includes a comprehensive list of his portraits, drawings and paintings in chronological order. Book condition: internals very good; lower board edge worn and soiled (not affecting pages), endpapers and page edges browned/spotted. Jacket: spine and folds very faded, edges chipped and worn with loss, 4 inch tear (repaired with tape on inside) at top of spine; protected with a Brodart plastic sleeve. Now a very scarce book.
