'An interval of five years has elapsed since the termination of my engagement in the service of His Highness the Khedive of Egypt, to suppress the slave-hunters of Central Africa, and to annex the countries constituting the Nile Basin, with the object of opening those savage regions to legitimate commerce and establishing a permanent government,' [preface]. A book containing much more than the attempts of suppression of slavery; here we find accounts of attacks on the party by natives, wildlife hunts of antelopes, elephants, hippopotamus, their discovery of, and journey along the White Nile, as well as military stratagem when attacking the slave traders; 472pp. plus appendix of 38pp. and an index of 14pp.

Condition: the ruled green boards have some light green patchiness at the edges (probably due to past moth activity), corners bumped and frayed, gilt spine still well preserved, bottle green end-papers still fine, page edges uncut, minimal foxing throughout text, binding cracked at pp.144/5. Over all, a fairly well preserved and readable copy.
