Jan van Riebeeck. Die Grondlegger van 'n Blanke Suid-Afrika (1938)

Little need be said about either the author or his subject, except perhaps that Leipoldt, as usual, writes simply and attractively and doesn't trouble his reader with notes or references; and, as a bonus, does not limit his coverage to Van Riebeeck's years at the Cape but includes both his early life and an essay on Holland at the time, as well his later years in India and another essay on the character of South Africa's first Governor.

The beige cloth-boards, brown and green letter and design to the front and brown lettering to the spine, show very light wear only to the foot of the spine. There is only a suggestion of loosening of the binding. The printed endpapers have an owner signature and bookseller's sticker at the front. The title-page is foxed towards the top and front edges but there is no other discolouring in the book, whose contents - vii + 269 pp of text and index + frontispiece and several other inserted b/w plates - are complete, unmarked and in very good condition.
