This is a RARE, complete example of the famous 1899 Friedrich Heinrich Jeppe map of the South African Republic, or Republic of the Transvaal. It was issued shortly before the outbreak of the Second Boer War. The British tried to ban the map that was actually used by both British and Boers during the war.

This is arguably the finest map of the Transvaal. The complete set of six sheets in an original carboard folder is very uncommon. This map is from the Africana collection of James Hamilton Russell M.P. (his bookplate on front pastedown.

In 1892, Jeppe started to compiled information from surveys of the republic began compiling information for this map as early as 1892. Unlike the Cape, there was not a history of surveys of farms.

When Jeppe became terminally ill, he enlisted the assistance of Friedrich Bernard Rissik to ensure that his son CFW (Charles) Jeppe could complete the work. Jeppe Jnr completed the project in 1899 and sent it to Switzerland to be engraved and printed by Jakob Schlumpf on waxed silk using a chromolithography method; the map was then published by Stanford in London.

Friedrich Heinrich Jeppe (1834 - 1898) was a German-born mapmaker who started his career in South Africa in the Post Office. He published numerous large format maps, all of which are collectors’ items. Eventually he obtained the position of Chief Draughtsman in the Department of the Surveyor-General. Jakob Schlumpf was a Swiss printer in Zurich. The quality of the Jeppe map is testimony enough to the excellence of his company’s work.  Edward Stanford was the founder of a famous, a prolific publishing company, which produced many maps of southern Africa. one of the most prolific map publishing firms of the late 19th century.

This set of six sheets is in fine condition and the cardboard case with the maps bears the bookplate of James Hamilton Russell MP.
