Sought after first impression of the first edition this famous book, of which only 5000 copies of the first impression were printed. The book was illustrated by E. Caldwell: Jock illustrated on the upper cover; distinctive drawings of this impression are the dung beetle pushing his load with his front legs, instead of rear legs) on pages 65, 337 and 457 ; Snowball the horse is being dragged out of the river on page 316. These drawings were changed in later impressions.

This much loved book is still tightly bound in its original gilt-illustrated green cloth cover. It shows only slightest wear and tear. There is some foxing on few pages.

Coloured frontispiece: JOCK. Numerous illustrations and vignettes.   466 pp + Notes.

Included with the book is a letter by Fitzpatrick to John Hopley (from his library), the South African sportsman who farmed for many years in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe): The John Hopley Memorial Trophy has awarded each year to the Zimbabwean Sportsman of the Year from 1956.
