These two Van Riebeeck Society volumes (Nos 42 and 45) were published in 1961 and 1964. R F Kennedy, the editor, was then head of the Africana Library in Johannesburg. In both volumes he gratefully acknowledges the courtesy of Mr Harry Oppenheimer in making the Baines manuscripts available and thus assuring the first publication of the journals.
The volumes - fine examples of scholarship and readability - are among the best of the first Van Riebeeck Society series.
- Volume One 1842-1849. xx + 252 pp of text and index + frontispiece and 20 other inserted b/w halftones + folding map.
- Volume Two 1850-1853. xii + 355 pp of text and index + frontispiece and 20 other inserted b/w halftones (including some dps's + 1 folding map and 1 other map.
The volumes are particularly valuable for their extensive bibliography of the sources of Baines' journals and for the dating of his paintings and sketches carried out during the 12 years of his travels documented in this journal. (His later paintings, including those printed in the bird portfolio of Lot 268, are not listed.)
CONDITION NOTES. The covers as well as the corners of Vol 1 are lightly rubbed. There are ex libris labels on both paste-downs and an owner signature and year on the front free endpaper of Vol 1. The contents, including the plates and maps, are complete, unmarked and undiscoloured.
