The trial issue of Lantern was published in August 1949. It was confirmed as Vol 1 No 1 of what was to become an iconic South African cultural publication, issued approximately quarterly, for more than forty years.
It was published "under the patronage of the National Advisory Council for Adult Education of the Department of Education, Arts and Science".
The condition of these issues, covering the period from 1949 to 1957, ranges from good to very good.
