Contemporary green pebble-grained morocco by John Leighton of London, blindstamped arms on upper cover and monogram on the lower of Sir William Stirling-Maxwell, spine lettered in gilt, original printed blue paper wrappers bound in, gilt edges (joints and corners lightly rubbed).
Provenance: Sir William Stirling-Maxwell (binding, armorial bookplate at front, "Keir/proverbs" collection bookplate at rear; autograph note); Lt.Col. V.S.M. De Guinsbourg (bookplate).
The Stirling-Maxwell copy of a very limited edition - 'only eighty copies printed' (according to Stirling-Maxwell's note on the front free endpaper). This work is a fine 19th-century reprint of the 16th-century original (published in Lyons in 1539).
