The "liberated zone" is Crossroads, in Cape Town, in the year of South Africa's first post-Apartheid elections.
For his photographs for this book David Lurie received a 1992 American Pictures of the Year "Award of Excellence for a Magazine Picture Story".
The author, Rian Malan, opens his commentary with the words: "I first saw the landscape where these photographs were taken in the summer of 1965 [he was then 11] through the windows of my father's car . . . "
Drawn-on limp laminated covers with wraparound monochrome photograph, plain endpapers + some 90 unpaginated pp of text and captioned monochrome photographs, all printed on heavy gloss-art paper.
The copy is unmarked and as new.
