Born in 1851 and educated at Rugby school, Selous left for Africa in 1870 to be a big game hunter, he spent much of his time hunting in sub-Saharan Africa and served in the Matabele wars. During the great war, he was given a commission in the 25th Btn of the Fusiliers, The Frontiersman at the age 63 was killed during the campaign. Later a unit of the Rhodesian Special forces took his name as the Selous Scouts.
