An early and oft reprinted work on lion stalking, Gerard hunted in western and central Algeria during the 1840s. Besides his encounters with lion, he describes hunts for leopard, gazelle and wild boar. There is an interesting chapter on falconry in the region as well. The book concludes with chapters on lion, tiger, leopard, elephant, etc., extracted from books written by other hunters. Attractive colored and gilt pictorial vignette of a lion on the top cover, and gilt titles and hunting motif on the spine. Cloth lightly soiled. Frontispiece and text illustrations. Original pale yellow endpapers with a small, childish drawing on the front pastedown. A tight copy.
