The handwritten inscription, "To Lari & Danie [Venter], Compliments & best wishes. N Mandela 17.1.96". on the title-page is offset in chrome on the half-title verso. (See the images.) The copy is otherwise unmarked.

This is an early (1994 or 1995) impression of the first edition, but not the first impression. (For some reason the publisher omitted the impression number in this particular printing.)

The laminated full-colour dustjacket has a bookseller sticker at the foot of the front flap and unobtrusive triangular upper corner creases - 1 x 1 x 1.5 cm at the front and smaller at the back - mirroring the bumps to the black cloth-board cover corners. The spine is gilt lettered. Present and bright are endpaper maps and the x + 630 pp of text and index + 24 pp of monochrome photographs inserted in three 8-pp sections.

Inside the book is a cutting from Le Monde (14 February 1995) announcing the publication by Fayard of the French version, "Un long chemin vers la liberte", with short reviews by Wole Soyinka, Marc Epstein and Andre Brink.
