Decorative cloth-boards with printed design and lettering in three colours to the front and spine. The boards are rubbed and bumped and the spine is faded. The binding is loose with the gauze exposed at both hinges and some cracking between sections. Plain endpapers, sunned, with owner\'s stamp at front and back. 299 pp + xvi pp of publisher\'s announcements + sepia frontispiece with tissue protector intact + 15 other tipped-in plates and a map. 14 of the plates are present although one is detached and one partially detached. Light foxing to three back leaves.
The book was published to mark the Field Marshal\'s death, characteristically in harness. It covers his military career in India and South Africa, as well as the years leading up to the first world war.
